Greatness Clothed in Purple

How Great is Our God

Celebrating the King

”How Great is Our God” is an extravagant parade introduction for a victorious king who has conquered. My purple, burgundy, and crimson flags are those you might wave before your king to announce the king’s presence.

This dance of celebration was born out of a color study. My favorite color is purple. I love all variations of purple: violet, burgundy, lavender. Light purple, dark purple. I surround myself with purple – purple harp, purple bedsheets, purple water bottle, tablet cover, books, bags, clothing, bridal bouquets. Given the option, I prefer purple.

But why am I so drawn to the color purple? Colors subconsciously affect a person’s emotions and perceptions. A person’s response to a particular color or combinations of color can be different depending on their age, gender, culture or experiences. However, colors can produce common associations. People often associate the color purple with royalty, extravagance or vanity.

The Meaning of Purple

In the Bible, the color purple represents royalty, priesthood and wealth. The Israelites created fabrics, clothing, and other materials from wool that was dyed various colors. Dyes were created from various plants, minerals and other resources found in nature. For example, pomegranates were used to dye wool pink, red or yellow-orange. Woad flowers were ground into a powder and used to dye wool blue.

Purple dye came from the murex, a mollusk found in the great sea. Hundreds or thousands of murex shells were required to create a rich purple color, but the murex was very difficult to find. For this reason, purple dye was very expensive. Purple garments were only affordable by royalty and the wealthy.

In scripture, purple identifies:

  • Wealth (Proverbs 31:22; Luke 16:19)
  • Royalty (Esther 8:15; Daniel 5:29; Judges 8:26)
  • Kings (Esther 1:6; Song of Solomon 3:9-10)
  • Authority (Daniel 5:7; Daniel 5:16; Ezekiel 23:6)
  • Priesthood (Exodus 28; Exodus 36; Exodus 39)

Purple fabric was also used in the curtains of the tabernacle (Exodus 36). In Solomon’s temple, a veil of blue, purple and crimson linen hung between the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies (2 Chronicles 3:14). Priests passed through this threshold to enter the presence of God.

Moreover, from the blue and purple and scarlet fabric, they made finely woven garments for serving and ministering in the Holy Place; they made the holy garments for Aaron, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

How Great is Our God

lyrics by Chris Tomlin

The splendor of a King
Clothed in majesty
Let all the earth rejoice
All the earth rejoice
He wraps himself in light
And darkness tries to hide
It trembles at his voice
Trembles at his voice

How great is our God
Sing with me, how great is our God
And all will see, how great
How great is our God

And age to age, he stands
And time is in his hands
Beginning and the end
Beginning and the end
The Godhead, three in one
Father, Spirit, Son
Lion and the Lamb
Lion and the Lamb

How great is our God
Sing with me, how great is our God
And all will see, how great
How great is our God

Name above all names
Worthy of our praise
My heart will sing, how great is our God
Name above all names
You are worthy of our praise
And my heart will sing, how great is our God

How great is our God
Sing with me, how great is our God
And all will see, how great
How great is our God

How great is our God
Sing with me, how great is our God
And all will see, how great
How great is our God

How great is our God
Sing with me, how great is our God
And all will see, how great
How great is our God

Who is this who comes from Edom, With crimson-stained garments from Bozrah [in Edom], This One (the Messiah) who is majestic in His apparel, Marching in the greatness of His might?

“It is I, [the One] who speaks in righteousness [proclaiming vindication], mighty to save.”

Why is Your apparel red, And Your garments like the one who treads in the wine press?

“I have trodden the wine trough alone, And of the peoples there was no one with Me. I also trod them in My anger And trampled them in My wrath; And their lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments, And I stained all My clothes. For the day of vengeance [against ungodliness] was in My heart, And My year of redemption [of those who put their trust in Me—the year of My redeemed] has come.”

Isaiah 63:1-4

still image of Claire of Called to Flag

Holy Spirit gave me chills the first time I watched this beautiful worship by Claire Shieh of Called to Flag.

I arose and this was in my heart. Lord, thank you for life, for putting breath in my lungs. For giving me a home, a family. Health. I love you with all my heart. You are worthy of it all. For from you are all things and to you are all things. You deserve the glory! 🙌🏾

Wake up in His presence, in awe of his glory!

Give God your everything to thank him for all he’s given to you.

You are worthy of it all
You are worthy of it all
For from You are all things
And to You are all things
You deserve the glory

Flagger: Claire Shieh of Called to Flag

Claire’s personal story truly reflects God’s faithfulness. Claire was prophesied over that God was going to revive to her her rich spiritual inheritance, which came through her blood line. Through research of her family name, she found that her ancestors were royal flag makers.

Excerpt from her biography: “God spoke to her about how he honored and still remembered the faithfulness of her ancestors and blood line to Him. He asked her if she wanted to take her flags back. In that moment she felt overwhelmed by God’s love for her and her family. For the ten years before, she had felt little and small compared to David her husband who was a fourth generational believer, but that was gone! All the puzzle pieces fit together; why she had been attracted to and picked up flags with ease, why she loved the colors of the flags, why she prayed and flagged the way she did, what the prophesy had been talking about with her spiritual inheritance, and finally winning her flags back with the draw. This was her royal family and spiritual inheritance!

Today, Claire teaches, inspires and leads generations of flag worshippers. Read more about Claire on her website, Called to Flag.
